Çîroka borîya têdeyî · An earlier past
Use hatibûm and dîtibû to relate two past moments.
By the end of this lessonBuild the past perfect with bû and locate an event before another past reference point.
The idea
For a consonant-final past stem, add i and the past of bûn: hat-i-bûm, hatibûyî, hatibû, hatibûn. A vowel-final stem adds bû directly: çûbûm, çûbûyî, çûbû, çûbûn. The result describes an earlier past: Gava tu hatî, ez çûbûm (When you came, I had gone). Transitives keep oblique doers and object agreement: Wê ez dîtibûm; Min ew dîtibû.
See it in a sentence
Negate the whole verb with ne-: nehatibûm, neçûbûm, nedîtibû. Write the forms together in this course. This is the past perfect, distinct from dûdar (hatime). In broader narratives it can also express a more remote past without an explicit second event; the exercises use a clear earlier/later contrast.
Build it step by step
- Locate a past reference point and the event that happened before it.
- Build past stem + i + bû for consonant stems, or past stem + bû for vowel stems.
- Choose the ending from the intransitive subject or transitive object; add ne- for negation.
| Person / tense | hatin | çûn |
|---|---|---|
| ez | hatibûm | çûbûm |
| tu | hatibûyî | çûbûyî |
| ew (singular) | hatibû | çûbû |
| em / hûn / ew (plural) | hatibûn | çûbûn |
| Têdeyî: completed | Ez hatim. | Ez çûm. |
| Dûdar: relevant now | Ez hatime. | Ez çûme. |
| Berdest: ongoing / habitual | Ez dihatim. | Ez diçûm. |
| Çîrok: earlier past | Ez hatibûm. | Ez çûbûm. |
Take a sentence apart
when you came: later past reference
I had gone: earlier event
English “had gone” and Turkish “gitmişti” help show past-before-past; Kurdish also uses this form more broadly in narratives.
A common trap
Incorrect: Ez hatbûm.
Correct: Ez hatibûm.
Insert i between consonant-final hat- and bûm in the taught pattern.
